This project aims to interpret migration phenomena as instances of creolisation. The original aspect of this project stands in the intuition of borrowing Glissant’s poetical vision of creolisation and to apply it to two distinct processes of creation. On one side we choose Performing Arts, namely theatre, in order to produce a play in which artists from diverse theatrical backgrounds are forced to the negotiation of expressive codes, practices and meanings. Therefore, the ‘creolisation’ of theatrical practices becomes an essential element of the play itself. On the other side, we choose to engage with an interdisciplinary research in the Social Sciences and Humanities in order to develop new conceptual tools and an integrated framework for the analysis of migration phenomena, by seeking a deep exchange among disciplines and researchers with diverse theoretical and methodological backgrounds. By pairing the features of the two processes of creation - the fi rst understood as an intercultural constitution of identity, the second as an interdisciplinary elaboration of analytic methodology - we expect to indicate the potentialities of a creolised approach to a better grasping of intercultural dynamics.
Creole Performance Cycle
The Creole Performance Cycle will be a theatrical perfomance staged in a number of different cities in Romania, France, Hungary, Poland and Italy. The intention for the performance is that it develops and changes at each stage in the encounter with different places, languages and artists that operate through diverse creative processes and poetics.
The Emigrants
After thirty-five years since the first performance of “The Emigrants”, directed by A. Wajda, Jerzy Sthur, at that time protagonist, reads S. Mrozek text anew for staging it in the various partner countries of “Playing Identities”.
In the secluded microcosm of a cellar full of drainpipes, two fugitives, interpreted by Massimiliano Poli and Angelo Romagnoli, play a game of subtle cruelties within the turns of a nonstop quarrel.
Scientific Research
One of the peculiar characteristics of this project is to conduct an interdisciplinary scientific research concerning the concepts of “creolisation” and “creation” with an approach that is different but complementary from the theatrical one. Anthropologists, sociologists, philosophers and many other Ph.D Students from different European Universities will constitute the research group. “Creolisation” of theoretical and methodological means will come along with the analysis of creolisation processes in migration contexts. The aim is to try to return these contexts complexity by a transdisciplinary work, with the support of visual arts and photography. Scientific research activities will be published and disseminated through seminars, presentations, and workshops that will be announced during the process.
Seminars and visiting chair
The research process will be sided by a series of seminars held by humanities and social sciences scholars, writers, musicians, and by the researchers involved in the project, who will disseminate the progress and results of their work. A Visiting Chair in “Studies on Creolisation”, to be entrusted to a distinguished scholar in this field, will be instituted at Santa Chiara Graduate School.
